The prophets and apostles saw visions of the final Anti-Christ and architect of the ancient dream called Babylon. They warned us to beware of his false promises of world peace. In an age of global terrorism, economic collapse, and ecological disaster, the climate is ripe for “the man of peace” who will seduce the world. But wise men still find their refuge in “the Prince of Peace” who alone shoulders their anxieties. The prophet Isaiah says of his new world order: “…and the lion will lie down with the lamb…”
Archeologists and tourists rummage through the ancient rubble of a broken dream called Babylon. Yet the gullible are still willing to exchange their freedoms for the promises of utopian schemers and strongmen. They trade eternity for the misery of dashed hopes. Only a world order whose architect and builder is “the Mighty God” can bring lasting joy. The rest are destined to be swept into the dustbin of forgotten history.
Who would have believed that Joseph gazed at “the Everlasting Father” in a newborn baby? Is there greater love than eternal God imprisoning himself in time and space to redeem a fallen world? Architects of new world orders promise paradise but create beasts of prey that devour our dreams. The Everlasting Father searches for lost sons and daughters, restores them to their intended glory, and establishes a kingdom that brings true dignity and purpose to lives once discarded on the ash heaps of failed aspirations.
Writer Joseph Conrad said, “Stripped of godliness, all human government is doomed to the dark winter of despair.” But Jesus brings hope as “the Wonderful Counselor” of Isaiah’s Christmas prophecy. History shows that architects of new world orders are reduced to recycling tired old solutions. But those who still seek him today will find wisdom as ancient as the counsels of eternity past and as relevant as tomorrow’s most pressing problems.
