When Roman soldiers raised their shields to protect themselves from flaming missiles, their eyes were instantly covered. With protection came darkness. They had to move forward by believing in the dark what they had first seen in the light. Indeed, faith is a shield with three dimensions: saving faith, sustaining faith, and systematic faith. All three are critical.
Hand-to-hand combat is fought toe-to-toe. The one who falls first usually loses. The Romans ruled the world because their legionnaires wore innovative sandals that gripped the ground when it became slippery. Paul tells us that we can only stand firm when we wear “the gospel of peace.” What do these gospel shoes look like, how do we wear them, and how do they help us fight wars?
Without body armor, a soldier is left exposed and vulnerable. A Roman soldier wore a breastplate to protect the most vital organ of all as he advanced on the enemy. The world’s wisest man said, “Above all else, guard your heart…” (Prov. 4:23). Paul tells us that righteousness keeps us alive. We need to know what it looks like, how to put it on, and how to keep it on.
Satan is called the “father of lies.” The puritan Thomas Watson wrote, “He is to be most feared when he transforms himself into an angel of light.” The belt is a girdle protecting the guts. Only the truth can protect us from our emotions. The sword of truth is our offensive weapon. Battle ready warriors never leave home without the truth.
