In many ways Jonah is like the older brother in Christs Parable of the Prodigal Son. Both find it impossible to celebrate the grace of God, and both stories end abruptly, without resolution. Its up to us to finish these stories. Will we join the party and embrace the lost?
God sent Jonah to preach a message of doom and destruction. The bitter prophet was delighted to spew out fire and brimstone against a city that he despised. But, to his surprise and Gods delight, the Assyrian capital repented. As a result, God repented of his anger and had compassion on that hellhole of human depravity.
One of the great doctrines of Scripture is The Perseverance of the Saints. St. Augustine said that its more likely Gods perseverance with the saints. Simply stated, God will never give up on usno matter how many times we fall down.
Corrie Ten Boom and her Dutch family were deported to a brutal Nazi concentration camp for hiding Jews. Only Corrie survived this horrific holocaust. She later wrote, No pit is so deep that God is not deeper still. Jonah discovered the same truth in the belly of a monstrous fish.
