God sent Jonah to preach a message of doom and destruction. The bitter prophet was delighted to spew out fire and brimstone against a city that he despised. But, to his surprise and God’s delight, the Assyrian capital repented. As a result, God repented of his anger and had compassion on that hellhole of human depravity.

Corrie Ten Boom and her Dutch family were deported to a brutal Nazi concentration camp for hiding Jews. Only Corrie survived this horrific holocaust. She later wrote, “No pit is so deep that God is not deeper still.” Jonah discovered the same truth in the belly of a monstrous fish.
