The wisest man who ever lived penned a proverb that is both comforting and sobering: “Whom the Lord loves, he disciplines.” If he loves us, he will not allow us to sin with impunity. But his chastening is a severe mercy. Jesus is never seen more clearly than in this amazing story of redemption on the Mediterranean Sea.

No one falls into rebellion. It is a deliberate choice. For Jonah, it was a sequence of choices that led him steadily downward. When Jonah wanted to get as far away from Nineveh as possible, the devil provided the getaway boat.

The first eight words of Jonah present the urgency of its drama: “The word of the Lord came to Jonah…” Immediately we are confronted with the greatest issue of life: what will a person do with the word of God?
