Whether it is in the realm of government, church, or the home, each one of us knows the struggle of submission. David knew the struggle as well as any of us, and yet out of obedience to God he submitted to Saul as king. Where do we find the power to submit when our authorities are unkind, selfish, or just plain wrong? To get the submissive heart of a lamb, you must submit your heart to The Lamb.
The kingdom of God will never be advanced unless we are courageous. God delights when a shepherd boy with the heart of a lion bravely marches out to topple a giant. The principle for becoming people "after the heart of God" is a paraphrase from Rudy Tomjanovich: Never underestimate the heart of a lion.
If we pursue the heart of God, we will discover that it is a heart that seeks intimate relationships. It is impossible to have the heart of God and be a loner. Once connected to God's heart, we will want to connect to others' hearts. David was a great friend to Jonathan because he was already a great friend of God.
Defeated lives do not reflect God's glory. Warriors who bear his name should never hide behind rocks in fear. His glory is in shepherd boys armed with slingshots and hearts full of faith, marching boldly out to topple giants.
