As long ago as ancient Greece, and as recent as postmodern America, the older generation thinks the next is going to the dogs. Is there a certain hope for future generations? There is a hope only insofar as the present generation is certain that it will pass on the future its legacy from the past.
Is there a greater question than that posed by David: Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? The answer plunges us into uncertainty that borders on hopelessness: only those with clean hands and pure hearts. But theres good news: when we cant ascend the hill of God, he comes down to us by way of a hill called Calvary.
Mother Teresa wrote, The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of being alone. Writer and sociologist, Thomas Wolfe says that loneliness is the inevitable fact of postmodern life. In an American Idol culture, where people are desperate to be noticed, David says that we are always the object of Gods attention and affection.
Times of uncertainty are made easier when we realize that they are seasons of life. Seasons come and go, but Gods plans are immutable. Though our fortunes might be down today, he has plans to prosper our future. There is great optimism in this Psalm: He who goes out weeping will return with songs of joy.
