Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do good things happen to bad people? David deals with the age old problem of Gods fairness.
If we are to remain great as a nation, we must stay good as individuals. After his sin with Bathsheba, David wrote the 51st Psalm as his great prayer of confession and repentance.
David understands that there's danger in ascending to the top. That's why he begins his Song of Ascent with these words: "My heart is not proud, O Lord; my eyes are not haughty " St. Augustine wrote, "It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels."
Life is a journey to a higher place. We are all going home. Dorothy was right in The Wizard of Oz: home is where the heart is. But, like those ancient Jewish pilgrims, the journey home is long and dangerous. We will walk in places that will terrify us. We will spend sleepless nights listening to things that go bump in the dark. Predators will attack.
