Soil Samples

In the same way seeds cannot take root in some soils, neither will truth bear fruit in some hearts. Sophocles wrote, "What people believe prevails over truth." Some 2500 years later Max Dore speaks for postmoderns in the book The New Intimacy: "The belief that there is only one truth is the deepest root of evil in the world." In practical terms, Jesus shows us what to watch for if we want to be effective in sowing the truth. He also warns us to guard our own hearts so that truth may root and flower in us.

Power Seed

Take a seed the size of a freckle. Put it under several inches of dirt, give it enough water, light, and fertilizer, and then get ready to watch a miracle. A mountain will be moved even if the ground is a zillion times the weight of the seed. Millions of people will be fed for countless generations from the fruit of a single seed. Jesus wants us to understand the incalculable and incomparable power of the Word of God when it is scattered on the hearts of men and women.

Grace with a Backbone

In The Lower Depths, Maxim Gorky penned this line: “Truth doesn’t always heal a wounded soul.” Truth without grace can be harsh. Yet grace without truth can be sentimental jelly. In this parable, Jesus tells his disciples that we are called to sow the truth. It won’t always make us popular in an age of political correctness that despises absolutes. The Father’s House must be a place where grace is stiffened with the backbone of truth.

My Brother’s Keeper

The Parable of the Prodigal Sonis a story with three main characters: two brothers and a father. Theologians argue about which of the three characters are the focus of Christ’s story. But the hero of the story doesn’t even appear. Yet he is interwoven into every line of the story: the third brother. It is this mysterious third brother who shows us how to finish the story as we become a house of grace.
